My dad was also colorblind with certain colors. Like your father he had trouble with reds and greens and negotiated traffic lights in the same way.
When we went out ( me as a kid) to pick wild raspberries he always explained to me to pick the red only. They were the ones you can eat. His jar usually had equal amounts of red and green.
