I can tell when my kids are done with me for the day.

I’d noticed a few moments before I had given him his reading assignment — which I immediately regretted — that Joe was beginning to show signs of needing to leave. I think it came when I was describing my characters. You see, my boys and I were never the feely-touchy types; we’re not comfortable sharing our emotions with each other: it’s one of the ways I feel I could have done so much better as a father. I believe the girls found it easier to talk with their mother. At any rate, my description of my book’s characters inside my head was beginning to get a little too personal. To the point of being whacked. (Is that right? I’m probably not using that right. Am I?)
