When my artist friend said that he had a wedding present for me, I was suitably grateful. I should have seen the red flag when he said that he shouldn’t give it to me at the wedding.
In a bit of madness, my ex wife and I decided to get married; me nearing retirement; she just getting started. It lasted less than 7 years.
We hadn’t made many mutual acquaintances before we got joined in holy matrimony, coming from different states.
How this marriage came to be is a story in itself.
Maybe to be told at a different time.
Is it that we seem to have more dangers than we’ve ever had or is it that I’m just getting older?
After tossing and turning half the night, as has been my practice lately, I finally fell off to sleep. I was soon awakened by an ear splitting sound. Groggily feeling my way around and regaining my senses one at a time, I realized that it was a thunder storm warning for my area. Now fully awake, I could hear the rain, hear the thunder. How come those sounds didn’t wake me up but the iPhone warning did?
You may be surprised at what you discover.

Self-Made Man: One Woman’s Year Disguised as a Man is a book by journalist Norah Vincent originally published in 2006.
Norah tied down her boobs, got her hair cut man’s style and bought a closet full of clothes. She became “Ned.” She joined a men’s bowling league, got a high pressure sales job, actually lived in a monastery, in addition to dating women who thought she was a man. …
Happiness can be found with an either a YES or NO answer to that question.
The best commencement speech I’ve ever heard was given by Spike Lee. It was presented to the class of 1997 for my daughter’s graduation from Emerson College in Boston.
For the uninitiated, Emerson is a college noted for its education in the dramatic arts with such luminaries as Norman Leer ‘44, Henry Winkler ‘67, Denis Leary ‘79, Jay Leno ‘83, Joley Fisher ‘89, among many successful loyal alums.
Without notes, Spike opened his stream of conscience graduation speech by stating a startling:

The world has only seen 286 scattered years without war over the past 3,421. Peace in only 8% of the the total
President Biden gave a speech to the UN this morning proudly announcing the United States no longer in a foreign war for the first time in 21 years. I’m sure that peace pronouncement brought joy to most Americans.
Our nation’s history, however, doesn’t portend a continuation of the peace to which Biden was referring. Since our nation's inception in 1776, the United States has been at war 222 out of 239 years. We’ve experienced less than 20 years…
There are hundreds of books on how to make millions using the BRRRR method of investing in real estate.
How about the other BRRRR? The one for recalcitrant tenants
There are too many books about how to make millions of passive income investing in real estate. Granted, buying real estate and observing all the value this wonderful investment can bring to your net worth is exhilarating.
Appreciation of real estate is a financial aphrodisiac.
Real estate has certainly been good to me.
I’l bet, most of the authors of these many instructional tomes have made much more from their literary…
There are two ways to react to impossible people: try to befriend them, give them some responsibility or avoid them altogether and take your chances they won’t notice you and leave you alone.
Almost everyone has either heard, read about or seen the movie. It was headline news, the disaster at Altamont Speedway during the rock concert 12/6/69.
The promoters along with the lead act, the Rolling Stones, were afraid the show may be interrupted by the outlaw motor cycle gang (now called club) Hells Angels. To ward off this possibility foolishly, in retrospect, they hired the gang for security…
I was about to give my first retirement investment seminar. I was hyped, ready and knowledgeable — but wrong.
Fresh off the FINRA exam and certified as a newly-minted financial planner, I was determined to save the financial world. Failing that, at least secure the retirement of my clients.
My problem at this early stage of my career— I needed clients to advise.
My mother had recently lost her husband to heart failure. She then experienced a robbery in her home where she had lived for 50 some years. …
The explosion happened after we left the submarine.
Every year we visited my Uncle Larry’s in Hollywood, Florida over the kids Christmas vacation. We stayed for close to a week. With three youngun’s ages six, eight and eleven, we were constantly on the lookout for interesting educational activities to intersperse with the normal sun and sand to which most Northern families look forward when visiting South Florida.
That’s why, when Uncle Larry found out the Navy was giving tours of the newest nuclear submarine docked at Port Canaveral the kids and I were excited to take one!
The three hour…
